Missing Traffic Cops add to Woes of Unregulated Peak hour Traffic on Asaripallam Road

Nagercoil. 30.03.18

With the new traffic diversions in effect since last week for the Nagercoil’s outbound traffic to Trivandrum & other west side towns diverted into Asaripallam road @Derik Junction, the peak hour traffic almost grinds to a halt during the week days between 8.15 to 9.15am and between 3.45 to 4.15pm.

It has been a week since the new diversion is in effect but in the absence of Traffic Police to regulate Nagercoil’s out–bound traffic to the West on Asaripallam Road, especially at the Belfield-KKMCH First Gate Bus-Stop, most of the time traffic is self regulated.

The Assaripallam road turns dense with traffic in the morning and evening peak hours. Most of the local traffic is made of the staff & visitors to KKMCH, school vans & parents dropping students at Belfield Matric, Corpus Christy School, Govt. School, and the townsfolk moving to places of work from the dense residential hubs on both sides of Asaripallam road. It is among this student-rich traffic that the Commercial heavy vehicles, Luxury buses, Inter-state service & local shuttle now ply on Asaripallam road.

Two bus-stops for the local & Mini-buses near the Belfield-KKMCH junction add more waiting minutes to already slow moving traffic, causing unnecessary delays for commuters travelling into town through the Asaripallam road and for those out-bound. Another bottleneck happens right where the Bus Depot walls end and the cluster of Tea shops begin at the timber Depot Junction. Here happy tea drinkers park on both sides of the road, right where the road begins to bend causing unwanted traffic jams, over their cup of tea.

Road-crossing, inspite of a Zebra opposite to the Belfield Matric, is almost next to impossible for hundreds of school and college students, who use public transport unless somebody overflowing with Civic-anxiety volunteers to play the Traffic Cop for the children to cross the road. Where have Nagercoil’s white-shirted Traffic cops gone? Seen some on Vettornimadam road. Why is Asaripallam Road neglected inspite of a Police station @Asaripallam, all within a kilometer from these Traffic Hotspots.

Following below are the new Route Markings for Trivandrum Road bound Traffic from Nagercoil Town
